With Christmas time fast approaching, we are all in a big dilemna. Most of the 55 million arent very joyous at all, while the neophytes will be celebrating their major step to Christian Theorcracy. The corporations always get their way, no matter who wins. Perhaps we should encourage the 55 million to not shop for Christmas. Jesus was poor. Isn't it a bit "unChristian" to buy crap at Walmart that is basically landfill in 1 year? Product wrapping, plastic shrink, boxes made out of our forests.
I for one was never a consumer- instead embracing the concept of "voluntary simplicity". I shop at resale shops for clothes when I need them, eat low on the food chain, and can go days without spending money on "crap". I encourage all to do the same. Don't spend money on garbage. Your not saving American jobs, since they are all in China for the garbage you will buy in a box store anyway. Americans arent earning that money, but the Corporations sure as hell are. Why support the group that supports Bush? If 55 million of us stopped being " consumers" and only purchased things we needed, the Corporations would be on Bush's doorstep rather quickly. Bush's first request of American's after 9/11 was " go spend money". Obviously it is quite important. So Don't spend money for Christmans. They need to know we are pissed. They can take away our political power, but we need to show them our financial power.
Cut back and save. Explain to the kids why this year is a bit different. If you need to give, give to the environment, a shelter, whatever. Try it. You feel more empowered writing a check to save the forests in the kids names ( or any other of your choice) then slapping the CC down at a box store, and throwing out what you bought next year. The old pardigm has shifted. We need to realize we can also shape a new one. The first step is to realize how much power we still control in this country. In America, money is power. Lets show them that is true- just not on their terms but ours.
